Point Loma Church & Redbrick School

Project Description

The SDCRAA hired JP to provide building envelope and ventilation improvements to Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church & Redbrick Preschool, located within the Point Loma neighborhood in San Diego, CA. This project is part of SDCRAA’s Quieter Home Program, designed to reduce interior noise levels in eligible homes and non-residential properties affected by San Diego International Airport operations. As Architect and Owner’s Project Manager, JP designed sound insulation treatments for the chapel, teaching, and worship areas in the administration areas, and the family life center, totaling approximately one-third of the existing campus.

Project Highlights

Balanced historic preservation constraints with the need for immediate treatments in non-historic sections required careful planning. The solution involved a two-phase approach:

  • Phase I – Initial acoustic treatments for non-historic areas
  • Phase II – Acoustic treatments for historic areas of the campus and HVAC upgrades for all eligible areas.

Researched and selected hollow metal doors with applied moldings for the family life center and custom-thickness wood acoustic doors for the chapel entry doors. All impacted doors were located in assembly spaces; therefore, egress considerations impacted door hardware selection.

  • Doors installed:
    • 6 openings at the chapel and administration areas.
    • 9 openings at the family life center.

Replaced existing multi-panel operable clearstory windows in the chapel with a simpler fixed window design.

Installed custom-shaped acoustic storm windows, which allowed the existing stained glass to remain.

  • Total windows installed:
    • 39 openings at the chapel and administration areas
    • 29 openings at the family life center
