Rita Smith, AIA spoke in the session on Island Adventures: Insulating Unusual Structures: Airports can be faced with insulating non-residential structures located within their noise contour. This session focused on three unusual airport projects: discovering a design solution for Minneapolis’ residential thru the wall air conditioners; Philadelphia’s challenge of insulating historic Ft. Mifflin; and an update on the Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center project.
John Donoghue, GISP, MBA spoke about Using Dynamic Websites for Improved Public Information in the session on Navigation Aids: Tools for Managing Your Program: Many airports today are utilizing software and the internet to manage their mitigation programs. A discussion about the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), use of websites to communicate with the public, and Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) will be highlighted.
Michael Payne, AIA moderated the session on Ship’s Bells: Noisy at Any Level: Is there any level at which noise is not an annoyance or is noise annoyance always a matter of perception and expectation? This session will address whether using noise effects (such as sleep interruption, interference with learning, irritation, etc.) as a supplemental metric is simply too subjective. Conversely, discussion will take place to address the current DNL metric – is it too rigid and not responsive to the ways communities experience noise? Consider the Schultz curve – is it still relevant? Other psycho acoustical studies will be discussed that may guide us in looking at how noise affects people and at what point it needs to be mitigated.
